The Story of James Jimmy

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, my journey with photography has been deeply rooted in the culture, history, and soul of the South. I spent six years in Houston learning the industry side of photography—understanding not just how to capture images but how to bring stories to life through visual art. From there, I moved to New York, where I spent two years sharpening my skills, pushing my creative boundaries, and immersing myself in the raw energy of the streets.

My work is a reflection of the people, places, and emotions that define Black culture and Black Southern culture. Through both digital and film photography, I seek to preserve the authenticity of everyday life—moments that are often overlooked but hold the deepest meaning. There’s a warmth in the way I approach street photography, especially when working with film. Each frame is an intimate portrait, a testament to the beauty, resilience, and spirit of the people I capture.

Photography, for me, is more than just taking pictures—it’s about telling stories, honoring heritage, and creating a visual legacy that resonates. Whether it’s the depth in a stranger’s gaze, the quiet poetry of a Southern street corner, or the unfiltered joy of a shared moment, I strive to capture images that make you feel something real.
